Many people may have a home stereo equalizer installed in their stereo system but few know how to properly use it. There are certain guidelines that need to be followed when setting up an adjusting equalizer for optimum use. While these are not difficult steps, they are important nonetheless.

The first thing to remember when setting up an equalizer is to ensure that the RCA cables are in the correct spots for line in and line out.  Failure to do so may result in a feedback loop or the more real possibility of it not working at all.  These cables are color-coded as are the input jacks on both the equalizer and the receiver, making this fairly simple.

Once the cables on the eq are hooked up properly, the next step is to choose a piece of music that you know relatively well. The reasoning behind this is that if you know what it is supposed to sound like, then adjusting the equalizer to achieve that sound should be an easy process.  Try and find a piece of music that has both highs and lows in it that is distinctive.

By having a piece of music with distinctive ranges, each of the adjustments on the system will then be much easier to separate and adjust.  When beginning this process, set each of the knobs or sliders to zero.  For knobs they should be the center position and for sliders, it should be right in the middle.

Your home stereo equalizer may then be adjusted up or down for more treble, less bass or vice versa.  It will be necessary to adjust the equalizer to the type of music that you enjoy rather than each individual selection.  Take the time to try adjusting by using different styles of music to find a good middle ground.
