There are several factors to consider carefully when installing an outdoor network security camera to best capture video in its highest quality possible. Several of these considerations are related to the lighting conditions and direction of the light since this is probably one of the biggest influences that will determine the effectiveness of the images recorded. The positioning of the camera and the rest of the environment make up some of the most important considerations and camera positioning has a lot to do with the direction of light among other things.
The first thing you want to keep in mind is the purpose for putting up a camera in the first place. If you are looking for general trends in traffic movement then there isn’t such a high demand on the quality of the video but if you need to pinpoint individuals out of a crowd there is obviously a much higher standard required. Since we are talking about installing an outdoor security camera there are some legal restrictions you might want to become aware of as well to avoid violating invasion of privacy and other laws that govern surveillance in open areas.
To get the most out of your camera the lighting conditions have to be considered carefully. Some are obvious like avoiding direct sunlight or other bright sources of light as these will blind the camera and greatly reduce the usefulness of the captured video. You always want the bright light to come from behind the camera whenever possible. Then we also want to avoid backlight which is a common problem that can be offset by adding frontal lighting. Another solution for this backlight problem is by using a camera that supports a wide dynamic range. Sometimes there is little you can do about the lighting environment and in such instances you can sometimes fiddle with the camera settings to obtain the optimal recording quality and make the best of poor conditions.
