Safe technology has come a long way in recent years. What was once a luxury of Swiss banks, governments, and the wealthy elite, the advancements in technology for safes and lockboxes is finally trickling down to the home consumer. Biometrics, fireproofing, enhanced durability, and other developments have become commonplace on the market today.

One of the more recent enhancements to make its way into consumer safes is biometric technology. Biometrics can come in a number of different ways, ranging from facial recognition and fingerprinting to retina scans and DNA testing. One of the most common types of safe to include biometrics is a fingerprint gun safe.

A fingerprint lock is an excellent way for gun owners to safely secure their firearms and keep them out of the hands of unauthorized users. This includes small children, unreliable teens, or anyone else not trusted to safely handle the weapon. The system works by programming user profiles into the system. Any given user may program multiple finger profiles into the system, allowing maximum probability of a successful first scan to open the safe.

Another technology that has become quite important in modern safes is fireproofing. Finding a good fireproof gun safe used to be a difficult task. Nowadays however, more and more people have come to realize the importance of not only locking their firearms, but protecting them from other outside risks.

In some circumstances, it may be far more likely that safe is damaged by fire than by an intrusion attempt. As such, it has become increasingly more important that the safe employ proper fireproofing technology.

The fireproofing on the safe is determined by a combination of factors. Manufacturers try to rate the safe as to how long it is expected to withstand a certain level of heat. The fire rating is then often expressed in hours.
