Build a Simple Wireless Home Network
Wireless home networks are becoming more popular all the time mostly due to the convenience of not having to run cables through the house. A home wireless network works just like with a public wireless network, a wireless ready computer is connected as soon as it detects the wireless signal.
Specific wireless equipment is necessary to build a home network that operates wirelessly. A wireless router is the first piece of equipment that is required. The router receives the signal from you ISP (internet service provider) and then transmits the signal to wireless enabled devices.
There are many different brands of routers available from various retailers both online and in your local area. Prices vary depending both on the brand and the hardware options offered such as single band or dual band routers. Single band will be less costly, but dual band routers will offer faster speeds. Your choice should be based on how fast your ISP connection is as well as how much you want to spend.
Once you have your wireless router set up, any computer that is wireless ready will be able to access the network. Most new laptops have built in wireless connectivity and will not need any other hardware. If you have a laptop that is not wireless ready or a desktop machine that you want to connect you will need a wireless adapter that will receive the wireless signal. You can choose wireless adapters that are either internal or external.
One of the simplest options is the USB wireless card. Instead of opening up the computer case and installing the hardware, you simply plug the USB adapter into an available USB port. USB wireless adapters are available with or without built in antennas that help boost the signal strength. As with wireless routers, USB wireless network card prices vary depending on options offered.
Building a simple wireless home network is the quickest way to provide internet access to numerous computers throughout your home.
